Castell Imperator HofTrakehners

Breeding Trakehner horses of distinction since 1980.

The Barton Legacy

Originally from Germany, Ricarda Barton-Wall and her late mother, the much-loved Marie-Luise Barton, have been a major influence on Trakehner bloodlines in North America.  Their love affair with the Trakehner horse began many years previously, with Ricarda's wonderful mare, Tjabine.  The Bartons came to the United States in 1980, bringing with them two important stallions -- Ricardo and Avignon II -- and 15 top-quality mares.

Ricardo, by Index, was Reserve Champion at the 1973 Neumunster inspection and stood at stud in Germany until 1980, when the Bartons imported him to the USA.   Ricardo sired three approved sons and the dam of the great Butow.  He continued his stud duties at Castell Imperator until his death in 1983.

Avignon II, a son of the Elite stallion Flaneur, was a brother to the legendary Arogno.  He was the sire of Pajou, an approved stallion, as well as several successful mares.

Of the 15 carefully selected mares, several went on to become foundation dams for many successful North-American Trakehners.

Ricarda is an accomplished horsewoman in her own right, holding an Instructor's Certification from Germany.  She is also a past winner of several championships - including a win at the prestigious Bundeschampionat with one of her young mares.  Ricarda has dedicated her life to the horses she breeds.  Each foal and young horse is treated like the priceless treasure that it is.  The care and kindness invested in each horse is evident from the loving, trainable character, correct conformation and good health of the youngsters that come from her herd.  Ricarda's careful, intelligent breeding efforts have produced several Breeding Stallions and Elite mares, as well as numerous champions in the Dressage, Hunter, Jumper and Eventing disciplines.  Building on the classical "T" and "P" mare lines, Ricarda continues to work tirelessly to uphold the legacy of the Trakehner horse.
